What is Sea Freight Shipping?

More than 90% of commodity transportation in the world is carried by sea. This makes sea freight one of the most popular and frequently used shipping methods of transportation. Despite slow shipping times, sea shipping is a cost-effective and reliable way to transport large volumes of goods.

What is LCL and FCL Container Freight Shipping?

If the cargo to be transported does not fill a container, cargoes with two or more recipients are loaded into it, providing Seaway Partial Service Service (LCL) and Full Container Load (FCL) are two options for container cargo transportation.

LCL means combining several cargoes in one container and FCL means a full container loaded by a single shipper.

Container freight transport: LCL and FCL

Sea freight is carried in containers that come in different sizes. The smallest container has a capacity of 33 cubic meters, the largest 76 cubic meters. In truck transportation, there are large container and small container shipments. If you don't have enough cargo to fill the entire container, you can still ship overseas.

When choosing. Sometimes it may be cheaper to ship FCL even if you don't fill a whole container.

Sea Freight Costs
Sea shipping is known to be the most cost-effective method of shipping a container overseas. Essentially, sea freight rates depend on freight volume, weight, destination, and many additional factors. In general, the average transit time is 30 – 45 days. Unless your cargo is very heavy, seaway charges will be based on volume weight.

What are the benefits of Sea Freight transport?

Low cost

The most attractive advantage of maritime transport is its low price compared to air transport or even truck transport. If you plan shipments ahead of time and can withstand long transit times, shipping by sea can be an extremely efficient and cost-effective shipping option.

Less Emissions

Shipping is one of the least environmentally damaging ways of shipping cargo overseas. To tell the truth, 2 tons of transport per 5,000 km by ship causes 160 kg of greenhouse gas emissions, while the same kilometer by air transport is 6,605 kg of CO2. This makes shipping a much more sustainable option than any other mode of transport.

Capacity

Sea freight containers are very large and can carry up to 26,500 kg each. This is perfect for large quantities of goods. Maritime transport is in high demand and there is no shortage of capacity, so it is possible to plan maritime transport if you consider long transit times.

What are the disadvantages of maritime transport?

Long transport times

Sea freight takes weeks, sometimes even months, to reach its destination. This is a disadvantage of low sea freight rates. Ordinary shipment from China to Turkey takes 25 - 75 days compared to 2-3 days by air.

Safety

Sea freight is less protected during shipping than air freight. The nature of ocean shipping makes cargo more vulnerable to damage such as falling off the ship or even piracy. While freight loss and theft rates are low, there is a greater threat to a shipment on board than on an airplane.

Reliability

In addition to long transit times, shipments by sea are often subject to delays and disruptions due to customs clearance, weather and other conditions. Due to these factors, sea shipping delivery dates are quite uncertain.
